Circle History - Josephine McDermott Circle - est. 2002
The new Josephine McDermott
Circle was formed in 2002. We were a
group of 8 women (Shannon Crowley,
Linda Kinerk, Lendy Vail, Jennifer Roberts, Jennifer Tiesi, Brooks Romano, Beth
Mullen and Maureen Ridgeway) who all had children of the same age. We all attended preschool together and our
children were about to go off to many different schools for kindergarten. We
wanted a way to keep connected. Another
gal at our preschool was Sheila Ryan.
She was a very active member of ACC in a circle named after her mother (Katie
McKay). Sheila had told us about the
circles of women who gathered to fundraise and support women and children and
also support each other. We decided this
would be a great way to stay in touch and help the community at the same time. Sheila
and her sister in law Gretchen McKay met with us and we formed the new
Josephine McDermott Circle under the guidance of Kathy Schober.
Our group is a nice mix of women; some Catholic from various parishes and some non-Catholic. We work together to raise money for the Association for Catholic Childhood in many ways. We have sold Easter Lilies, have held a Holiday Bazaar and most recently had a Wine Tasting Event. Our circle works on providing the quarterly newsletter for you. This is always a great time to catch up with members in our group.
In addition to our fund-raising activities, we also work together in our community. Each December, our circle buys gifts for 10-20 children whom are less fortunate. In the past we have provided meals and a holiday party to Our Place Day Care pre-school for homeless children. When the pre-school closed down, we found a new project. Our circle now prepares meals to approximately 70 homeless teens in the Seattle area at the University District Youth Center.
Although our members have changed over the past six years, 6 out of 8 of our founding members remain. We are looking forward to building our friendship as we continue our efforts in fundraising and community work for the Association for Catholic Childhood.
