Circle History - Holy Angels Circle - est. 1953
Organized in
September of 1953. A group of 12 women were gathered together by founder of our
circle, Patricia Walsh Anderson, to explore the possibility of forming a circle
of ACC to increase our bonds of friendship and provide us an opportunity to
help the children under the care of Catholic Community Services.
We selected our
name: Holy Angels Circle because we felt that so much of our volunteer work and
commitment was tied into what the ACC called "angel duty" in support
of Catholic Community Services in providing care for children. We sewed layette
items, crafted toys and clothes for sale at Fantasy Fair, drove foster parents
and children to medical appointments and other therapy needs. So we labeled
ourselves "Holy Angels".
Most of the members had ties to Seattle University, either as classmates or spouses of classmates. During the next two or three years, membership doubled as more friends, family and neighbors were invited to join our group. Original members (or as many as we can remember after 50+ years) were:
Patricia Walsh Anderson, Lynn Benedict, Barbara Blewett, Lynn Coan, Patricia Dwyer, Joyce Graaf, Jeanette Hulburt and Joyce Woolsey. Only Jeanette Hulburt remains from that original group, but others who joined since our founding and are still active in the circle are: Sam Anderson (husband of founder Pat), Beth Benedetti, Mary Anne Gray, Gini Harmon ,Brenda Kalberer, Virginia Lodwig, Joan Mladineo, Lorraine Ochs, June Pratt, Doris Roller, Mary Sullivan, Beverly Taylor and Dolly Williams. During our most active years, we had as many members as 30 at a time but lost many to out-of-town or state moves, or various other commitments.
Some of our most fun and memorable projects were preparing and working for the annual Fantasy Fair. One very early effort was crafting mobiles for hanging in nurseries-ballerinas for girls and clowns for boys. Nylon net for tutus, colorful materials for clown suits, pipe cleaners for bodies and round wooden beads for heads, fish line and bamboo sticks for hanging-and then, finding a place large enough to hang them until they could be packed for sale at the fair! Later, we volunteered to handle the white elephant booth at the fair, figuring it might be less work! Well, it wasn't but we certainly made more money at the fair. Husbands were often coerced into volunteering to help our efforts. A major fund raiser for a number of years was an annual buffet dinner dance - held in community centers' in north Seattle. Members sold tickets to friends and neighbors, set up facilities, decorated, and prepared food for all. Music and dancing for a finale was fun for all attendees ..
One tradition that we have all cherished is our annual Lenten Mass & breakfast when we gather in various churches, usually in North Seattle, Capitol Hill or Bellevue to enjoy and celebrate our longtime friendships and then share a meal. This feeds our souls as well as our bodies.
We consider ourselves blessed that we have been able to nurture these friendships for fifty plus years and continue to help ACC in whatever ways we can. We’re not as active as in years past but we still gather twice a year, once in summer just for fun and during the Christmas season to give of our blessings "for the children".
